The Reverend Canon David Evans
Canon Evans, Rector of Hilgay with Ten Mile Bank and Southery, died at home on 3rd January after having been diagnosed with cancer last October. He had served in the Ely diocese since 1990 having previously been Rector of Somersham, Pidley and Old Hurst, Acting Priest in charge of Wretton with Stoke Ferry and Whittington. Canon Evans was ordained and served in the Southwark diocese prior to his move to Ely.

Canon Evans was licensed as Rural Dean of the Fincham and Feltwell Deanery in 2009 and as an honorary Canon of the Cathedral at a service held in December 2011. It was as Rural Dean that the eight parishes in this benefice got to know him. During the recent interregnum he chaired the regular meetings of the churchwardens and offered invaluable advice and support. He was also very supportive to us as individuals. Canon Evans is survived by his wife Jean and their three children Ian, Daniel and Heloise.
Canon Evans was buried at Hilgay after a service in Hilgay church. He will be very much missed.
