Too Busy to Read?
If you love great books but you’re not sure which titles to choose, then help is at
hand at your local library. During March, Norfolk Library and Information
Service is promoting Books for Busy People which is a range of great books
detailed in a handy credit card sized leaflet with reviews and suggested further
reading titles. So if you’d love to relax with a good book but don’t have the time
to browse the shelves, or don’t know what to choose when you do, why not pop
along to your local library and save time by choosing one of the selected titles?
All libraries will be displaying the Books for Busy People titles as part of the
Great Big Read campaign which includes World Book Day and World Book
Night promotions and there are a number of events organised, visit
www.norfolk.gov.uk/libraries for full details.
It’s free to join the library and borrow books. You can even join online at
www.norfolk.gov.uk/libraries . Books can be renewed and reserved online or by
calling 0344 800 8006. To avoid overdue charges an email alert can be sent to
you just before your books are due back, please ask library staff for details.
Are You A Library Member?
If not, may we ask why? There are so many
reasons to become one and, with more and
more people visiting Norfolk libraries a lot of
people agree! Throughout January Norfolk Library and Information Service is
promoting all the benefits of becoming a library member with a month-long
promotion called 'Join-Up January'. There are county council-run library
buildings and mobile libraries across Norfolk, which means there is likely to be
one fairly close to where you live, and there's so much more to them than a
place to borrow books. Did you know you can also borrow console games,
DVDs and CDs at reasonable rates and return them to any library? An ebooks
service was launched recently, allowing you to download and borrow ebooks for
free from the comfort of your own home. And there are always events, activities
and clubs for both children and adults going on in libraries. To coincide with
Join-Up January, the library service is launching its own Facebook page with
information on what the library can offer you, news about promotions and events
at libraries, and book news. Log onto www.norfolk.gov.uk/libraries to find out
more about this. It's completely free to join the library and really easy. You can
do it online at www.norfolk.gov.uk/libraries or drop into your local library and staff
will take down your details and get you and up and running in just a couple of
minutes. With libraries it's free to borrow books and magazines, use public PCs,
borrow ebooks from your own home, attend lots of events including children's
activities and author visits, learn how to use the internet if you're over 60 with
Surf's Up classes, access information from your local councils and other
organisations.

The library has something for everyone and it’s free to join. There are books, films and activities for all ages as well as information in books and online for school projects and hobbies. The PCs have free internet access and email and can be used to access the Norfolk Online Reference Library which contains a wealth of carefully researched reference information on a range of subjects including the arts, business, law, current affairs, local history, health, sport and travel.
Information on local services is provided by the council@yourlibrary service. Library staff can help you to find answers to questions on local services or sign post you to further help when necessary. You can even call your councils, the police, the local Citizens Advice Bureau, Job Seeker Direct, Home Options and Consumer Direct on a free phone if you need to. You can research local and family history at King’s Lynn library where there is a vast Local History Collection including Parish Registers, maps, newspaper cuttings, photographs and much more. Why not attend one of our talks or go on one of our “Walk’n’Talks”, where you can engage in healthy walking whilst learning about our local heritage. These take place in Norfolk History Month in September.
In addition, from the library home page you can visit Picture Norfolk which is a database of over 16,000 Norfolk images from the last 150 years, plus several other “local” databases set up by Norfolk Libraries, Museums and Record Office. But there are many things happening in Norfolk Libraries throughout the year why not pop in to see us and discover out what we can do for you….

Take Advantage of the Mobile Library
Norfolk County Council Norfolk operates 13 Public Mobile Libraries that call at over 2000 stops in the county. All mobiles are equipped with a lift for those with mobility problems and wheelchair users.
Each of the Group 4 Villages is visited every three weeks. Mobile Libraries are free to join - just take some proof of address along with you if visiting for the first time. They offer the following: -
Fiction books for adults and children.
DVDs for adults and children (a small charge applies).
Large print books.
Non-fiction books for adults and children: subject requests are free.
Audio books on CD and cassette tape (a small charge applies).
If you don’t find the book you want, a request service is offered for 55p. Customers who usually use the Norfolk branch libraries can also use the mobile service – just remember to take your library card along with you. Items borrowed in branches may be returned to the mobile library and vice versa.
Take advantage of this great asset and use the Mobile Library. We have lost many of our village amenities in recent years, so please support this wonderful service if you can.
