The Village Christmas Events
A very big thank you goes out to everyone who supported and helped in any way with all the Christmas celebrations in Barton Bendish in 2011. Things kicked off with the hugely successful Wreath making workshops at the end of November. Both evenings were fully booked and over 40 wreaths were made over the two nights as well as some orders taken for those who could not attend. There was lots of good fun and there were many fantastic wreaths on display around the village and beyond.

The Tree Festival and Hall of Stalls at the beginning of December were equally well supported. We had over 20 trees and displays in the church which made the Christingle on the Sunday a very special service. It was lovely to see St Andrew’s so full of children and their families. The Hall of Stalls provided people with the opportunity to purchase some very individual Christmas presents and the refreshments of baking, homemade soup and customary bacon rolls were very well received!

The Victorian Evening of Entertainment was such a super evening, thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended and also by those who took part. Stories, songs and even the Victorian version of The Generation Game kept everyone amused and it was lovely to see people entering into the spirit of the evening by dressing in Victorian clothes. The Carols and readings in the second half really got everyone into the Christmas mood. Thank you to all the artists for a most entertaining evening.

Thank you again to everyone who helped, supported and took part in any of these events. There is so much work goes into staging such activities and they could not happen without the help and support of those regular people, too numerous to mention individually. Your commitment is greatly appreciated.

The wonderful sum of £1100 was raised which will be split between the Church and the Village Hall.

Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2011
The Poppy Appeal in Barton Bendish and Eastmoor has once again been very successful.
Coffee Morning 19th November 451.47
House-to-house Poppy Sales 159.24
Berney Arms Poppy Sales 65.92
Total 676.63

We had a very happy coffee morning. It was lovely to see so many people from our own village and from surrounding ones. Royal British Legion Members were very impressed and grateful for all the support. A very willing group of helpers worked very hard to man the stalls and make teas and coffee and I thank them all. Also my sincere thanks to all who gave donations, prizes, cakes for the stall and refreshments and other items for sale. Many thanks too to all who gave their time to attend – without you the morning would not have been a success. I also say thanks to all the people of Barton Bendish and Eastmoor who gave so generously to the Poppy Sales.
Thank you all

Diamond Jubilee Celebrations
On Sunday 3rd June the whole country is encouraged to enjoy a meal together and we are planning a Potluck Picnic/Fun Day at the Village Hall and The Berney Arms. We hope to have something for everyone and any suggestions or offers of help to add to the festivities will be gratefully received. All Barton Bendish and Eastmoor residents, together with their families and those with a connection to the villages, are invited to join in. Put the date in your diary and “WATCH THIS SPACE”.

As part of the celebrations we intend to buy a quantity of bone china Windsor mugs featuring a traditional Diamond Jubilee design showing The Queen, with Barton Bendish logo on the reverse. The cost per mug should be £4.50 each providing we have a minimum order of 100 mugs. We need to know what demand to expect and hope you will support us by ordering now, together with payment.

A sample mug will be on display at The Berney Arms, or alternatively contact one of the names below for more information or to place your order.

St. Andrew’s Church
Sandwich Service: As you know, All Saints’ Church Boughton has been hosting a ‘Breakfast Church’ one Sunday a month since last summer. That service certainly seems to be filling a ‘gap’ in the type of worship offered locally. In Barton Bendish we are extremely well supported by our local communities at our fundraising events, for which we are incredibly grateful, but apart from our ‘festival services’ our Church services are not well attended. As the Diocese looks at ways of saving money it is important that we are able to show that our church is needed in our community and that it is relevant to the people in our village if we are to remain open. We have decided to hold a ‘Sandwich Service’ in the Village Hall at Barton Bendish on the first Sunday of the month at 9.30am. Changing our service to this time means that we are on a ‘different’ Sunday to Boughton and people wishing to have a formal communion service can then go on to the 11am service at Beachamwell on that day. The Sandwich Service will be extremely relaxed and informal and open to everyone. Young children are welcome, and there will be toys for them and a play area. Refreshments - bacon sandwiches and tea and coffee – will be provided, and what a better way to start a Sunday morning! The emphasis will be on having a relaxed time and enjoying an hour or so spent together.

Please come along and join us – no previous experience necessary!! In fact the Sandwich Service is especially good for those who have no experience of church but would like to give it a try. The first one will be in Barton Bendish Village Hall on Sunday 5th February at 9:30am.

On the fourth Sunday of each month we will continue to have a 6pm service which will become our Holy Communion service. This will be held also in the Village Hall until Palm Sunday and then in the Church after that. We are also working towards having the church open during daylight hours for anyone to visit for quiet reflection whenever it is required – we hope to start this after Palm Sunday as well.

The PCC would welcome any suggestions you have on the type of services you would like to attend at St Andrew’s or ways in which you feel the community might be encouraged to attend the services we offer. We do appreciate that it is important for the church to ‘move with the times’ and to provide what is wanted by all its parishioners so we really do need your help and suggestions. We do hope to see you soon!
