The Boughton Fen Committee (BFC) are responsible for the re-generation of Boughton Fen, a 44 acre nationally designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, located in rural West Norfolk. In 2003, Natural England classified the site as being in an ‘unfavourable condition’ with encroaching scrub and the consequence that without structured management this important site would become a woodland in a short period of time resulting in the loss of important wildlife currently existing in this environment.
The creation of the BFC in 2007 provided the structure to commence work to re-generate The Fen. Working under the guidance of Natural England, a Management Plan has been published that identifies the aims and work to be conducted to return The Fen to prime condition. Much of the work to date has been through the hard work, dedication and social inclusion of community working groups including both adults and children alike.
This project is for the creation of a circular wildlife walk of approximately 2.4Km that passes through a variety of natural habitat. Work will be required to prepare the route, the procurement and installation of boardwalks and duckboards through the wetter parts of The Fen and the erection of directional and information signs placed at strategic points on the walk. The primary aim of the project is to provide easy and unhindered access for the general public to this beautiful and rewarding habitat. All of the work undertaken will be through the use of sub-contractors and volunteer working parties.
What better way for an individual or family to spend quality time learning about the diverse habitat on The Fen, spotting our resident Kingfishers, otters and a multitude of other wildlife in a safe environment whilst sampling the benefits of spectacular Norfolk views, enjoying the simple pleasure of being outdoors and keeping fit at the same time?
We will be keeping you informed of any details as they become available.
